APPLICATION
The Applied Digital Islamic Studies Training Program (Text Analysis) is organized for researchers pursuing master’s and doctoral studies within faculties of Theology/Islamic Studies. Currently, undergraduate and graduate curricula in theology faculties do not yet include applied training in Digital Humanities. However, in the Digital Theology Research Training programs we previously organized with the support of TÜBİTAK for graduate students in theology, applications significantly exceeded the available quota (more than 250 applications were received for a quota of 60 participants). In this respect, the present training program aims to respond to a substantial level of interest in the field.
Graduate students have been identified as the primary target group, as they contribute directly to knowledge production in theology through their theses and academic publications. Since the adaptation of Digital Humanities methodologies to theological research requires a solid theological background, participants are expected not only to benefit from the training content but also to contribute to the learning process through their research questions, intellectual curiosity, and disciplinary perspectives.
Within this framework, the program is open to active master’s and doctoral students currently enrolled in faculties of Theology/Islamic Studies. The application form requests applicants’ full name, contact information (email), and educational background, as well as their department (verification through an official student certificate obtained via the e-government system will be required), thesis topic, academic interests, and motivation for applying to the program. In addition, information regarding publications (if any), involvement in TÜBİTAK-funded projects, intentions to use these methodologies in their research, prior training in programming languages such as Python (even at an introductory level), and familiarity with large language models such as ChatGPT is requested for the purposes outlined below.
In the selection of participants, careful consideration will be given to:
-
Ensuring balanced representation across the various departments within theology faculties (Basic Islamic Sciences, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Islamic History and Arts);
-
Achieving regional diversity by including participants from different regions of Türkiye;
-
Maintaining, as far as possible, a balanced gender distribution.
As accepted participants are required to be registered in the TÜBİTAK ARBİS system, they will be asked to create their accounts prior to the commencement of the training. Applicants must also not have been dismissed from their profession, public office, or institutional affiliation under Decree Laws enacted during the State of Emergency (OHAL), whether directly or through procedures stipulated therein.
In order to ensure the effective implementation of the program and to accommodate demand within practical limits, a total quota of 15 participants has been determined: 10 from Istanbul and 5 from outside Istanbul. In the event that applications exceed the quota, priority will be given to doctoral students. Final selection will be based on academic merit and demonstrated interest, taking into account the criteria specified in the application form, such as having publications, serving as a scholarship holder in a TÜBİTAK-funded project, having received training in programming languages such as R or Python (even at an introductory level), or intending to apply these methods in their thesis or research work.
